What You Need To Know About Laser Cutting

Laser Cutting | Lightning Laser Cutting

Laser cutting is the most accurate way to etch or engrave on your design and is by far the coolest way to show off your design skills. Laser cutting uses a high powered laser directed through optics to trim cut or slice different materials such as carbon, steel or metal.

The laser beam focuses on the material to either burn, melt or vaporize the material. It has become very popular in specialized engineering and among small businesses due to its ability to create high-quality surface edge finishes. It allows for multi-layered cutting and design that would take a skilled artist too much time to execute.

So how can anyone interested in this technology move forward? It is not difficult or very expensive but the following must be kept in mind.

Laser Cutting | Lightning Laser Cutting

1. The Type Of Material You Want To Cut Or Engrave.

The type of material you want to cut will eventually lead to the type of laser you need to purchase and the type of technique you will use.

• For a brittle material such as glass, you should use a thermal stress cracking cutting technique. This method uses thermal heating and expansion to etch through the material.

• If you are working with metals then you need a melt and blow method. This type of laser cutting is also referred to as fusion cutting. It uses high-pressure gas to blow away already melted material.

• For materials that are of a specific size, a special technique is used to perform flame cutting. Usually, this is used for Carbon or steel with a 1mm thickness.

• Vaporization cutting uses extreme heat to generate a keyhole cut for materials that do not melt like carbon and wood.

Now depending on the material and technique, you are willing to explore, then you can make a decision on the type of laser you want to purchase.

2. The Type Of Work The Laser Is Doing.

There are three main types of lasers out there in the market and the following can be used either industrially or for small businesses. Lasers are used to cut, engrave or to bore (drilling) on materials. Therefore depending on the type of work you want doing, you can choose between these types of lasers.

• A CO2 laser which is mainly used for engraving on surfaces.

• An Nd laser. This is a Neodymium laser that is used for low repetition boring, such as in earth boring situations

• A Nd-YAG laser mostly used foe welding in a high power situation. This is a laser employed in many industries.

3. The Weight Of Your Pocket.

Laser cutting is not a cheap endeavour but for the best results, you should be willing to spend some money to guarantee exquisite finishes on your designs. The cost of a laser cutter is high but cheaper alternatives are available for novices at stores like eBay.

If you have the time, then you can save a little money by purchasing the parts you need and assembling your own laser cutter. This will take a lot of time and patience on your part but will, in the long run, get you more acquainted with the specifics of the machine and save you a bit of cash. As an added advantage, you can easily repair a laser cutter that you have assembled since you took the time to know the machine.

4. Safety.

It is important that before you use a laser cutter to adhere to some safety precautions. Always wear the necessary safety equipment such a heavy duty gloves, before handling it. Take the time to train with a specialist on how to use a laser cutter. There are plenty of instruction videos on youtube that can help a novice become better acquainted with the technique. Operate a laser cutter in a balanced psychological state, when you are calm and collected. Ensure that you are also in the right physical shape to operate the machinery and lastly, have fun while using this cool machine.

In conclusion, laser cutting is a technique that has been adopted in various industries in the economy. However, it requires expertise and utmost safety for effective utilization. With the right equipment and safety precautions in place, this technique has revolutionized the way things are done.

Why Hydro Excavation is The Best Solution for Removing Liquid Waste

Hydro Excavation | Pressure Works

Removing liquid waste is considered harmful to people or the environment. It may be in the form of a sludge or purely liquid such as laboratory wastes.Liquid waste mostly comes from restaurants, homes, cars, washing machines and factories. Waste may be in the form of prescribed waste, oily water, surfactants, septic tank waste, grease traps, wash waters, among others.

Some of the most dangerous wastes include formaldehyde, corrosive substances, quarantine waste, contaminated soil, and other chemical wastes. The problem is, some companies usually dump these wastes directly into rivers and other water bodies. This is extremely dangerous. Do not do it.Liquid waste has very high amounts of toxic compounds such as salts and metals. Therefore, if it is not properly disposed of, it may cause health issues including diseases and even deaths of both people and animals.

That’s why you need to dispose of waste properly so that it would not harm people and animal.

OPTIONS FOR PROPER DISPOSAL

Some of the more common options for liquid waste removal include:

Dewatering and Sedimentation

This is usually an option when dealing with non-hazardous waste. Dewatering involves extraction of water, leaving behind solid components. Then, sedimentation is used to remove solid contaminants.

dewatering

Incineration

Where the liquid waste is deemed dangerous, incineration can be used. The waste is heated at very high temperatures eliminating most solid components (scrap metal, slag, rock, tailings, hardened oils, etc).

Root zone

The root zone is most commonly used when dealing with liquid waste coming from homes. This includes kitchen waste and bath water.Such water can simply be treated for recycling purposes and then safely reintroduced to the environment.

Compositing

Lastly, when dealing with organic waste, liquid waste removal can be done by compositing. Industrial compost waste management technique can transform any solid sediment into organic fertilizer.

Hydro excavation (HX)

However, there is a more advanced technique which is even more effective especially in industrial setups. It’s called hydro-excavation.

WHAT IS HYDRO EXCAVATION?

The primary quality of hydro excavation is that it is environment-friendly, more so that it is a green innovative technology. Also known as vacuum excavation, hydro excavation Melbourne technology uses pressurised water to safely and surgically convert solid ground into mud that can then be sucked up by a powerful truck-mounted vacuum system.

Basically, it is a not-mechanical and non-destructive process that combines pressurised water and high flow of moving air to simultaneously excavate native soils in a controlled manner. Hydro excavation Melbourne allows for quick, clean, and precise extraction with minimal labour, less backfill, and little environmental impact compared to conventional digging methods.

BENEFITS OF HYDRO EXCAVATION

This technique is considered superior to existing methods because it results in:

Clean Cuts

Using the pressurised water stream, the water gun works like a surgeon’s knife. This helps to ensure clean cuts with minimal post-excavation restoration activities.Hydro excavators can also be remotely placed so that the large imprint of the equipment can be easily removed.

Less material removed

With hydro excavators, you don’t need to remove a lot of material. This is partly because of the clean cutting capability. And, with less material being removed, there is usually less backfill to deal with and thus less restoration work needed.

Greater safety

In most excavation activities involving buried utilities, injuries and even deaths have been reported. Yes, they are that dangerous.Hydro-excavation is a less risky way of exposing buried utilities. Workers can stay on the surface during excavation eliminating the risk of cave-ins and potential other disasters.

Minimal environmental impact

Hydro excavation lends itself to a very clean process. First, less material is removed meaning there is less disruption to the surrounding environment. And secondly, any debris is usually stored onboard eliminating any chances of harmful chemicals being swept into water bodies. There are several other benefits of the technology.

Hydro excavation | Pressure Works

APPLICATIONS OF HYDRO EXCAVATION

Hydro excavation can be used in multiple waste removal situations including:

Potholing

Exposing or excavating underground utilities using HX is called potholing or day-lighting. The non-mechanical, non-destructive characteristics of hydro excavation make it ideal for this process. Underground utilities can be exposed without risks inherent in traditional excavation processes.Potholing can also be used in digging holes for telephone poles, signposts, and fences among others.

Slot trenching

If you’re looking to dig narrow trenches for installation of pipes, cables, and other in-ground utilities, you can also call on a hydro excavation. Unlike traditional slot trenches that usually cause expensive damages, HX provides, clean, non-destructive cuts even on frozen surfaces.

Mass removal

Hydro excavation can also be used in large-scale exposure of underground utilities. The HX equipment can quickly and safely expose underground utilities, especially when dealing with unknown “potentially dangerous” utilities.

Cold weather removal

Working in cold weather has always been an issue. The frozen ground causes many challenges that most other excavation techniques may not be able to handle. But hydro excavation is different. With a truck-mounted water heater warming the water to 150 degrees, freezing at any depth is never a problem. Moreover, utilising heated water to penetrate frost is a much more environmentally safe solution than emission-producing methods such as coal or wood firing.

Debris removal

Hydro excavation can also be used for debris removal. Cleaning different structures with this non-destructive method is quick and easy and you don’t have to worry about destroying the surrounding area. Other applications here include catch basin cleaning, sludge removal, and cleaning up sills.

Remote digging

When there is need to repair fibre cables, telephone lines, water mains, or other in-ground utility lines, HX can be used to excavate the utilities. This is because HX equipment can work in tight spaces with minimal impact and little restoration requirements.

Summary

In a nutshell, hydro excavation is a valuable removal technique that can help you dispose of buried waste quickly, safely and cost-effectively.

Thinking about upgrading to a smart locking system but not sure which will best suite your needs? Here are the most common types of locks you should know about.

Key Cutting Services | Solid Locksmiths

Deadbolts

Deadbolts are usually seen on the exterior of homes and are one of the most basic ways of securing a door on the market. It is most effective when used in combination with your doors’ less-secure standard lock, such as spring-bolt lock because it acts as an additional layer of security. There are three main types of the basic deadbolts including the single cylinder, the double cylinder and the lockable thumbturn styles.

The Single Cylinder

A single cylinder is one of the three main variations of the basic deadbolt lock. It operates with a key on one side of the lock (the outside) and a twist knob on the inside to open and close the lock. Some like to add an extra layer of security by installing a flip guard around the thumb turn. This prevents the thumb turn from rotating so that the deadbolt cannot be handpicked or even unlocked using the key when the guard is used.

However, the single cylinder does have one main weakness. If your home can be accessed through an open window or other, the door can be opened from the inside just by using the thumbturn.

The Double Cylinder

The double cylinder is another main type of deadbolt.  It is considered more secure but also more hazardous in comparison to the single cylinder deadbolt. This is due to the fact that a double cylinder requires a key on both the inside and the outside of the lock. This is why they do not require any twist knob which in consequence, provides more security because it prevents unwanted unlocking.

However, this gives double cylinders 2 main disadvantages. The first is if locked, you will always need a key to open the door even from the inside.  Secondly, in case of a fire or emergency situation, double cylinders can pose an even greater problem because they are very difficult to unlock from the inside without a key. This violates fire safety regulations which have gotten them banned in some cases. Nevertheless, it is strongly recommended that a key is left inside the lock on the inside of the house to allow for safe exit in case of an emergency.

The Lockable Thumbturn Style

The lockable thumbturn is the third main type of deadbolt and is a hybrid between a single and double cylinder locks.  It offers maximum security and flexibility because it can be locked from both the inside and the outside with either a thumbturn or a key.

These deadlocks feature a key cylinder on the outside of the door and a lockable thumb turn on the inside.  Locking the thumbturn can ensure the door cannot be locked or unlocked. Therefore when people are home, the thumbturn can be left unlocked and the door will work like a normal single cylinder deadbolt. However, if the house is left empty for long periods of time, the thumbturn can be easily locked and no one on the outside or inside can operate the lock.

Jimmy Deadbolts

These deadbolt locks are usually seen in apartments and on double doors and are mounted on the surface. They are often preferred because of the minimal door adjustments required during installation. They are also unique because of the deadbolt interlocks with the jamb bracket, making it more resistant to being simply pulled or forced apart from the outside than standard deadbolts.

Knob Locks

Knob locks are a form of spring locks which are usually seen on the exterior doors of residential homes. They are usually installed in combination with a deadbolt lock for added security because they are less secure, easy to pick and the knob can be broken off with enough force. That’s why knob locks are best used as interior locks as opposed to the exterior, especially in residential settings.

Lever Handle Locks

Locks with lever handles are frequently used in commercial settings on interior doors because they are even less secure than knob locks. They feature a large pushdown handle that can be opened with sheer force.

There are still a countless number of other traditional styled locks to talk about. However, if you are looking for a more modernised and digitally advanced smart locking system, there are other options for you to consider.

Electronic Digital Locks

There are several types of electronic locks such as those that use a swipe card or a pin code. They have been used on cars and hotels for a long time but are now available for instalment in residential settings too. Indeed there will always be the threat of having your property being broken into and with electronic locks, it is now a matter of hacking rather than picking. However these locks are convenient as they don’t need to be changed if you want to rekey, rather they can be reprogrammed.

Smart Locks

These locks are some of the latest technologies that have recently come out. Smart locks have been designed to operate remotely using an app on your phone. They are essentially a keyless alternative which comes in various designs to choose from.

At Solid Locksmiths, our reputation is built on years of experience and in-depth expertise that will deliver you a highly reliable,  safe and professional service! You can count on us to provide you with the best security solution that suits your distinct needs and falls within your budget.

Choosing a Professional Painter

How to Choose a Professional Painter?

Choosing a professional painter with due diligence will save you a lot of trouble. You need the right combination of experience and budget to make the right hire. Here are some pointers to help you hire the right professional painter.

Begin with realising what needs to be done. Spend some time pondering over the places you think needs paint fixtures. Have a clear idea of the outcome. Decide what colours you want to see on the walls, the textures, the extra fittings, the surface preparation and others. Armed with this knowledge, it will be easier to approach and talk to a paint service provider.

Licensing

Always hire a licensed painter. Check with the local licensing agency if a prospective painter is associated with them. Hiring a licensed painter guarantees decent work. Such a person is aware of latest tools and techniques to get the job done. The person will know how to deal with electrical issues, structural issues, and other paint related aspects. You will come across unlicensed painters too. However, just for saving few dollars, do not give in to the temptation of a cheaper alternative.

Insurance

Again, a licensed painter will be insured, and the liability depends on the state laws. The insurance should cover both the painter and you. Refrain from hiring painters without insurance.

Freelance Painter vs. a Team

Should you opt for a single painter operating on a freelance basis or hire a team? The answer depends on the requirements. We are not implying that a team is better than a single person or vice versa; ultimately, the choice depends on the work at hand. A complicated project is best suited for a team as they can comprehend faster and finish the work quickly and efficiently.

Quotation

You need a detailed quote. A genuine painter will give a specific quote, after studying the whole requirement. A competent painter will discuss with you the details of the work, time involved, types of materials that will be used, the number of coats, firm costs, and anything else applicable. Do not engage with a service provider who does not offer a detailed quote.

Experience

Painters in Melbourne | 1800 All Painting

Of course, if everyone starts to choose experienced painters in Melbourne, who will give the newcomers in the business a chance? The choice is yours. With a newcomer, you can check its license and talk with the training agency for reference. With an experienced person, you can ask for reference from previous clients and a portfolio of the accomplished work.

These are the five basic aspects you need to remember before hiring a house painter or a home painting services in Melbourne. Always do proper research and conduct due diligence.

Why Small Businesses Must Invest in Robots

small businesses invest in robots

Robotics is delivering a host of benefits to small businesses and the rest of the global economy.

No wonder more and more businesses turn to robotics to streamline operations. With this trend expected to continue, have you ever wondered what the workplace of the future would look like?

Some analyses infer that a huge percentage of the current employees will be taken over by robots. Hence, the use of robots is expected to increase.

On the other hand, the recent move by Mercedes to replace some of its production robots with people to keep up with the growing demand for more customization options indicates that people and robots can and will continue to work together.

Either way, robots undoubtedly benefits businesses and they are here to stay. Thus, it’s time to look at how they can work for you.

Here are the reasons small businesses must invest in robots and the potential advantage of making such a move.

Robots are more affordable than ever

Gone are the days when a single robot would cost at least $100,000. This is way above what most small businesses can afford without hurting their bottom line.

Today’s evolutionary robots, according to Barclays, cost an average of $24,000 each. There are even small robots which don’t cost more than $10,000.

This price tag can also be considered reasonable as a single contemporary robot can perform various tasks.

It’s easier to use robots today

You’d only need to use a tablet to program your robot or move its arm in the required pattern. Thus you don’t need to hire a qualified programming engineer.

Robots have become much safer to work with

robots for small businesses

Today’s robots don’t work in cages. The collaborative robots can work with people in the same environment, thanks to the advanced sensor and vision technology. Thus, if you are on its way, you won’t get hurt because the robot will stop moving.

Robots are versatile today

You’ll find them in homes as vacuum cleaners or laundry robots, or in offices and industrial environments completing some of the risky or monotonous tasks.

These Universal Robots are now smaller and can adapt to various environments. They also come in different shapes and sizes depending on the kind of task it is expected to do.

This means they can help automate most of your production activities.

Robots can significantly boost productivity

For the most part, robots are used for mundane or repetitive tasks. These are perfect for them since they will not feel bored or tired.

Moreover, robots will work the same way and at the same pace, hence, it will have the same production momentum throughout.

By automating the most repetitive and mundane parts of your company’s production processes, you can free skilled employees to focus their energy on more important tasks.

If a robot is filing papers, responding to general inquiries or taking calls throughout the day, for instance, business managers and other key workers have the freedom to focus on product development and other such key business processes, social and/or emotional component of the product or service.

Say goodbye to errors

Humans can commit costly errors, robots cannot. These machines are simply not affected by ambiguity. They can follow the standards you set and have no room for errors.

In contrast.  human workers could miss some important details or make mistakes because of burnout or fatigue.

Robots can help you control labour costs

Most companies are struggling with labour costs. It is worse in cases where there is high staff turnover. Recruitment cost and the cost of training new staff can cumulatively take a toll on your bottom line.

This cost is cut significantly when you automate. because you trim the number of workers you need.

What if a company can keep its labour costs at an all-time low while simultaneously increasing productivity? That’s a double blessing. And investing in today’s robots makes it all possible.

Wrap up

Robotics and related technologies already permeate the modern workplace and homes in a huge variety of forms.

This is so because business has realised the value these machines give — lower recruitment cost, lack of salary requirement, low maintenance cost and constant productivity, among others.

In view of this, it’s time to reap these benefits by looking into areas where robots can work together with people and help your business thrive.

Is Digital Printing Relevant to Your Business?

Digital printing is the process of printing an image directly from the computer system. Also known as desktop publishing, printing equipment is directly connected to the computer to deliver quick prints without compromising on the quality. They are printed using large format or with high-volume laser/inkjet printers.

color management

The digital prints are done on digitally certified papers for good quality output. In the last couple of years, the scope for digital printing improved drastically, to a level where the quality is almost similar to offset printing. Compared to offset printing, the digital option is speedier because there is no need for mixing inks, plate creation, and other offset activities.

Again, unlike the offset printing process, there are no setup costs. You do not need bulky machines or invest in creating expensive plates or commit a specific print output every month. Some digital printing options also offer inline finishing such as wire binding or saddle stitch. Overall, the cost of digital printing is less than offset printing.

One strong advantage of digital printing is the feasibility of customisation. In the offset printing option, you cannot make changes once the plates are set. If changes are required, it will cost a lot of money. In digital printing, you can customise or personalise every image. This is known as a variable date. For example, you want to print invites for an event and address the invitee with the first name. You can do this with digital printing.

Digital printing machines come with various effect possibilities. The HP Indigo machines come with special effect options like special Pantone PMS colours, white ink, clear varnish, gloss effects, raised ink, emboss effect, UV red invisible ink that fluoresces under ultraviolet light and more. If you wish to purchase a digital printing machine for the business, inquire about its features first.

The technology is environment-friendly. Since there are no plates or photo chemicals involved, there is no waste to pollute the environment. Offset printing uses a lot of water, but the digital processes are waterless, saving thousands of litres of water every year.

eco friendly

Lastly, you can print-on-demand.

If your business requires printing jobs to be occasionally done, like 1-1000 units, opt for digital printing option.
